We offer 3-month old Emu chicks. An Emu chick that will walk in hours and start running in a matter of few days. The chicks grow rapidly, gaining the normal adult height at one year of age. After six months, the birds would have shed most of their feathers for the fluffy, elegant feathers of adulthood. In extreme climatic conditions, they need shelter during the first few months. The birds are very hardy and adaptable.
They are about 10-inches tall at birth, with black and white stripes. As 3-month old chicks, they turn nearly solid black and change into a tan, brown and black mixture as adults, some having a bluish neck. The feathers are downy, with no stiff vein running through the center.
We offer Emu Birds aged 11 months to 15 months. A mature EMU bird is 5 to 6 feet tall and normally weighs between 40 and 60 kilograms. Flightless, they are very strong runners and reach ground speeds of up to 40 miles per hour in short bursts, covering about nine feet in one stride.
EMU adopt well to temperature extremes in excess of 1000F and down to below zero. Emu birds are not known to be afflicted by any diseases and none yet been diagnosed as common to the species. EMU birds are curious and docile. They can exist on a simple diet but require a lot of water – each bird consumes 8 to 15 liters daily. They also like to play in shallow water or wet mud. The hardiness of the EMU birds cannot over emphasized. These birds have been traced back 80 million years.
